The Road to Design

From a young age, I’ve always been interested in design.

I knew I wanted to break into the field, but with so many different areas to explore, how could I possibly focus on just one? The answer is: I didn’t. Not really. Although I studied fashion at university, I always kept my interests broad—constantly drawn to other forms of creativity, from graphic design to illustration to digital media.

Growing up, it feels like you’re supposed to know exactly what you want to do, even as a child. There’s often this unspoken pressure to pick a path early and stick to it. But boxing ourselves in like that can dampen creativity. In reality, we should have the freedom to explore multiple directions before settling on what truly excites us. And even then, we should always feel empowered to pivot, adapt, and start fresh.

My final knitted collection on the catwalk. This was inspired by a children's book I wrote and illustrated as part of my project, and marked the start of my illustration journey!

For me, design has never been about following a single straight road—it’s been a series of winding paths, each one leading to new discoveries. I’ve come to realize that my curiosity and love of learning are just as important as any technical skill. The more I explore, the more I grow as a designer.

Whether it’s experimenting with a new medium, refining a skill, or completely shifting focus, I believe that staying open to change is what keeps design exciting. After all, creativity thrives on exploration, and the road to design isn’t about reaching a final destination—it’s about enjoying the journey.

Although I moved away from fashion, I still like to design and make clothes - I made my own wedding dress!

Tip for Fellow Creatives: Don’t feel pressured to have everything figured out from the start. Experiment, learn, and allow your creativity to evolve. The best designs—and the most fulfilling careers—often come from embracing exploration and growth.
